OpenAI plans its own social network

OpenAI is reportedly working on its own social network that could compete with Elon Musk’s platform X. According to a recent report by the website The Verge, the project is still in an early development phase. Internal sources speak of an initial test version, but so far no official details from OpenAI have been released. The company declined to comment on its specific plans when asked.
The prototype of the new network is said to be linked to ChatGPT’s image generator and include a social media feed. It remains unclear whether this will be a standalone app or a new feature integrated into ChatGPT. The information comes from individuals familiar with the matter. There has been no official confirmation so far.
The relationship between OpenAI and Elon Musk has been tense for years. Musk is among those trying to legally block OpenAI’s transformation into a for-profit company. Currently, OpenAI is still controlled by a non-profit organization. The tech entrepreneur, along with other investors, submitted a takeover offer worth $97.4 billion, which was rejected.
A new social network from OpenAI could further strain the already difficult relationship between Musk and the AI company. Musk recently placed his platform X under the umbrella of his own AI firm, xAI, which is in direct competition with OpenAI. This structural shift makes it legally easier to use content from X to train artificial intelligence. Musk’s AI model, Grok, is closely integrated with X and uses content from the platform for its development.
Other major tech companies like Meta also use publicly available posts from their networks to train their AI systems. The training processes of such models require massive amounts of data, making social media a key source for relevant content. With its own network, OpenAI could likewise ensure access to the necessary training data and reduce its dependence on platforms like X or Facebook.
